April 13, 2025 - Speaker Series - The Magic of the Organ

Our chapel organ is carefully and expertly maintained by the internationally famous Schoenstein & Co. (Est. 1877), organ builders, of Benicia. Our presenters include the world-renowned Jack Bethards, Chairman and Tonal Advisor for Schoenstein & Co., and Bret Barner a skilled chapel organist, who frequently showcases his expertise and artistry through organ performances during special chapel events. This event will bring together the rich history of the Chapel organ accompanied by musical demonstrations that showcase its sublime sound. The occasion will highlight the organ’s evolution over time, from its inception to its present-day operation, and feature performances that exhibit its remarkable tonal capabilities. By combining historical context with live music, the event promises to be a unique and enriching experience, allowing attendees to appreciate the Chapel organ’s beauty and significance. Of note: Schoenstein & Co. refers to the pipe organ as “The King of instruments” and “must be a work of art to the eye and to the ear.” On St. Peter’s Chapel tours, with our luminous Tiffany-stained glass windows, we, as docents often share a Tiffany quote that “color is to the eye what music is to the ear.” Places where the artistry of art and music go hand in hand.

August 18, 2024 - Speaker Series - Telesforo - Cecilia I. Gaerlan

Vallejo’s population is over 20% Filipino, and a significant reason for that is the United States Navy. On January 15, 1921, aboard USS San Diego (ACR-6) Fireman Second Class Telesforo Trinidad heroically rescued two shipmates following boiler explosions in two firerooms. At great risk to his life and suffering from severe burns to his face, he lived up to the military ethos to “leave no man behind.” Trinidad is the only Asian American during peacetime to ever receive the Medal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty. Ms. Cecilia I. Gaerlan is the founder and executive director of the Bataan Legacy Historical Society and was a founding member of the campaign that resulted in the naming of the first U.S. Navy ship after a Filipino American sailor, the USS Telesforo Trinidad(DDG-139). Her organization also changed the California Department of Education’s 11th-grade history curriculum to include a discussion of the Philippines in World War II. She also sits on the Board of Trustees of the Hornet Sea, Air and Space Museum.

Speaker Series: Old 84

Join historian and journalist Brendan Riley as he describes another Mare Island legacy. The Navy's first land-based prison was built on Mare Island in 1868, and that prison soon became infamous throughout the fleet. The Navy was in transition from a time when ship's officers punished errant sailors by flogging them with a "cat o' nine tails." Following an 1850 congressional ban on flogging, the Navy experimented with alternative punishments, but it soon became clear a land-based prison system was needed. Reserve your seat now in Mare Island's historic Saint Peter's Chapel as Brendan walks us back to a time when armed Marine guards oversaw prison work crews and search parties rode through the North Bay in search of escapees.

Speaker Series: The Cold War

Nuclear subs and espionage - this is just a bit of the secret Mare Island was guarding during the Cold War.
